Destination 9: Mỹ Sơn (ETEC 531) - Cultural and New Media Studies
While in Vietnam, I rented a bicycle and toured through rice fields near the temple complex at Mỹ Sơn. Exploring new cultures in a foreign setting can be much like learning about the cultures and media that exist both inside and outside your classroom.
PAPER TRAIL: MEDIA STUDY GUIDE - "THE ISLAND"
For this artifact, I collaborated with Sabrina Holat to build a Media Study Guide on Human Cloning. It uses clips of the movies Jurassic Park and The Island
It is designed to be used as a cross-curricular media studies/biology class for the Grade 11-12 (senior high school) level. The image (right) is just that, an image. To access the PDF and Word file, please click the buttons below.
This artifact is another example of turning theory into practice; it can be seen as a 'sister' project to my Science 8 iBook inquiry activity and will hopefully be useful to teachers interested in Media Studies and cross-curricular activities.
*There are many websites included and embedded in the Media Study Guide (right). I have only included two of the many links available (in the READING MATERIAL section, below), which will give you an idea of the sorts of topics that this Study Guide deals with.

TOUR HIGHLIGHT: REPRESENTATIONS OF FEMALES IN S.T.E.M.
I chose to examine the portrayal of female scientists in the media, and consider reasons why many Science, Math, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) professions are male-dominated. Is this itself a misrepresentation of STEM? How do the media contribute to the problem? How can we overcome our prejudices, whether they are conscious or not?

In this day and age, with the rise of populism and the marginalization of minorities, immigrants and women, it's important to see how the media (mis)represents female in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. I hope this topic is of particular interest to science and math teachers, and will give everyone a chance to consider the implications of females in science and technology in today's ever-changing society.
